Behind the experts here at Ross & Connel, you’ll find a rich history dating back to 1894, proof of the extensive experience we have to offer each client, whatever their case. Building on the success of our founding partner John Ross, we have continued his legacy by adapting to challenges and changing landscapes, while remaining true to the ideals our firm was built upon. As one of Dunfermline’s oldest businesses, our is a history to be proud of.


A history of success
  • 1894
    Firm is founded by John Ross, a close friend and legal advisor to one of Dunfermline's most famous sons, Andrew Carnegie.
  • 1907
    John Ross is joined in partnership by John Connel.
  • 1921
    Founding partner, John Ross, is knighted.
  • 1922
    Sir John Ross retires.
  • 1931
    Sir John Ross dies.
  • 1943
    Captain John Connel is killed in action in Italy during Second World War.
  • 1948/1958
    Firm continues to grow with William Wardlaw and then Alan Stewart joining as Partners.
  • 1956
    Outgrow office premises at Guildhall Chambers, Guildhall Street, Dunfermline and move to 8/10 Viewfield Terrace, Dunfermline.
  • 1980
    Current Senior Partner, Hugh Short, assumed as Partner.
  • 1993
    Edward Christie assumed as Partner.
  • 1994
    Firm celebrates centenary year by taking whole office staff to Paris for long weekend.
  • 1997
    Alastair Bracken assumed as Partner.
  • 2003
    Moved to current office premises at 18 Viewfield Terrace, Dunfermline to accommodate growth of the firm.
  • 2005
    Partner at the time, Caroline Flanagan, is appointed as President of the Law Society of Scotland, becoming the first female to hold that post.
  • 2012
    The Firm of Ross & Connel became a Limited Liability Partnership. The current partners are the members of the LLP.
  • 2015
    Merged with Thomas Queen Solicitors, with Tom Queen joining as Consultant.
  • 2018
    Neil Queen assumed as Partner.
